County History

Kingsbury County was officially established on February 2, 1880, and De Smet was selected as the county seat on November 2, 1880. The county was named in honor of brothers George W. Kingsbury and Thomas A. (T.A.) Kingsbury, descendants of the colonial English Kingsbury family of Boston, Massachusetts. Both men played significant roles in the development of Dakota Territory, serving in several Territorial Legislatures and contributing to the region's early government.

According to the 2010 U.S. Census, Kingsbury County had a population of 5,148 residents.

The Historic Courthouse

The Kingsbury County Courthouse stands as one of the county's most recognizable landmarks. Construction of the original east wing began in 1898 with a budget not to exceed $4,000. Prior to its completion, many county offices operated from various buildings throughout De Smet.

In January 1898, contractor M. E. Bush was awarded the contract to construct the courthouse's west wing for $14,800. Additional improvements included the use of Springfield brick for the interior, raising the roofline of the east wing to match the west wing, landscaped grounds with trees and flowers, and curved walkways surrounding the courthouse.

Construction was completed in January 1899, and by January 17, county officials had moved into the new courthouse, where it quickly became the center of county government—a role it continues to serve today.
